How to avoid getting spyware?
Many people ask me this question. Unfortunately, there is no 100% working cure to that problem (maybe disconnecting pc from the net would do:). Definitely staying away from things like: free stuff, free games (casino palace), bargain "managers" (bargain buddy), weather programs, coupon "managers" and software for downloading music (yes! Kazaa and Morpheus contain spyware) etc. Also if you use outlook express or outlook from MS Office suite you should disable viewing emails as html pages and view them as a pure text. Keeping antivirus program updated and running scans at least once a week helps a lot. Sometimes you may get infected by malicious software that uses security holes either in operating system or particular programs like instant messaging software (AOL instant messenger, Yahoo Instant messenger, ICQ etc). So check once in a while for updated versions of them. Another good idea is to scan your PC periodically with programs like Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D. For more advanced users I recommend Hijack This with which you can remove many parasites manually. At the end I need to mention very important thing: The best way to do all the scans is to do it in "safe mode". Simply reboot your PC and just before you see Windows XP loading logo punch "F8" key. You’ll see a menu and from there choose safe mode with networking so you’ll be able to update antispyware programs before running scans (very important!). Ok, that’s all for now.
